When I first met Patrick Rich, he came across as approachable and personable. Unfortunately, that impression changed significantly over time. In my experience, his leadership style relied more on control than collaboration, and teachers who expressed different opinions often felt discouraged from speaking openly. Rather than creating an environment built on trust, transparency, and mutual respect, the culture became one where many staff members were hesitant to raise legitimate concerns out of fear of professional consequences. One of the most disappointing aspects of his leadership was the decline in staff morale. Instead of bringing people together around a shared vision, relationships became increasingly strained, communication lacked transparency, and many talented educators chose to leave the school. It was difficult to feel valued when teacher feedback appeared to carry little weight and important decisions were rarely explained. I also became concerned about the school's academic direction during his tenure. Student behavior became increasingly difficult to manage, expectations appeared to decline, and many teachers felt unsupported in maintaining consistent academic and behavioral standards. Over time, it seemed that preserving enrollment and avoiding conflict became a higher priority than addressing the underlying issues affecting teaching and learning. I recognize that every leader will have supporters and critics, and others may have had a different experience than I did. However, based on my own time working under Patrick Rich's leadership, I found him to be far more effective at creating a positive first impression than at building a healthy, collaborative, and professionally supportive school culture. The American International School Abu Dhabi has outstanding teachers and students who deserve leadership that values transparency, accountability, and open communication. My hope is that future leadership continues moving the school toward a culture where teachers are trusted, respected, and empowered to do what they do best: educate students.

What do you appreciate most about the leadership’s approach to supporting teachers and fostering a positive school environment?
Patrick Rich initially presented himself as approachable and supportive, which helped new teachers feel welcomed. Unfortunately, that positive first impression was not reflected in my long-term experience. I struggled to identify many leadership practices that consistently supported teachers or contributed to a healthy, collaborative work environment.
What improvements, if any, would you suggest to enhance the support or effectiveness of school leadership?
Leadership would benefit from becoming more transparent, approachable, and open to professional dialogue. Teachers should be able to express concerns or offer different perspectives without fearing negative consequences. Building trust, recognizing staff contributions, making decisions based on fairness rather than personal relationships, and encouraging collaboration instead of division would greatly improve both staff morale and the overall school culture.
Can you share an example of how leadership has positively and/or negatively impacted your teaching experience or your students’ success?
In my experience, the leadership culture under Patrick Rich had a negative impact on staff morale. Many teachers became hesitant to voice concerns because they worried about how it might affect their professional standing. As trust declined, collaboration suffered, staff turnover increased, and the overall focus shifted away from teaching and learning. Those challenges ultimately affected both educators and students by creating an environment where it became increasingly difficult to maintain high academic standards and a positive school culture.
