Overall, I think Ms. Beers-Rubin is doing a wonderful job. She clearly cares about her students and makes learning feel positive. Franklin Middle School has great teachers like her who just need a little extra support to keep doing what they do best.

What do you appreciate most about the school’s approach to supporting your child’s learning and development?

Right now, there’s nothing to appreciate. This school failed my family in the worst way. A school teacher sang a racist version of the birthday song, “𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘇𝗼𝗼, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼,” 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀. That is not funny, it’s offensive, humiliating, and completely inappropriate. For a teacher to do that to a 6-year-old shows a total lack of judgment and cultural awareness.

What improvements, if any, would you suggest to make the school experience better for students and parents?

There is no positive impact to speak of. We didn’t even find out what happened until it came out on the local news. Imagine turning on the TV and seeing your child’s story being covered by CBS Miami and WTSP before the school ever contacted you. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳, 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆, and the district stayed silent until the story broke publicly. The child was humiliated, and we were blindsided. That is beyond unacceptable.

Can you share an example of how the school has positively and/or negatively impacted your child’s academic or personal growth?

Start by owning up to what happened and apologizing publicly. The teacher should face disciplinary action, and the district needs to implement racial-sensitivity, trauma, and anti-bias training immediately. Parents deserve transparency, we should never have to hear about a racist act involving our child from the evening news. Real accountability and immediate communication should be the bare minimum.
