BASIS International School Shenzhen promotes itself as a flagship model but operates with practices that undermine its own claims. The culture is competitive to the point of dysfunction, teachers are overburdened, and leadership decisions appear reactive rather than strategic. For educators seeking a balanced, professional, and respectful workplace, this may not be the right fit.

What do you appreciate most about the school’s approach to supporting teachers and creating a positive work environment?

The compensation is competitive, especially by China standards. Some teachers appreciate that resources for high-achieving students are available, and that ambitious students can thrive academically under pressure.

What areas of improvement do you think the school should focus on to better support its teachers?

The school must drastically improve collaboration between the Chinese and international divisions, reduce unnecessary bureaucracy, and replace the fear-based evaluation system with one that values teaching quality over popularity. Transparency in survey use and genuine teacher support are essential.

Can you share an example of how the school has positively and/or negatively impacted your teaching or the learning experience of your students?

Positively, BASIS attracts students with strong academic drive. However, the extreme workload, lack of trust in teachers, and contradictory feedback from leadership make it difficult to maintain effective, creative, or student-centered teaching. Students often experience high stress and burnout due to unrealistic academic pressure.
